Our Story
Hi! I’m Sarah, the owner of Black Dog Acre, a mini farm in King William County VA. Black Dog Acre is named for my big black shepherd, Gravy. I only have an acre of land at the moment, but I hope to make the most of it over the coming years and provide homegrown eggs, fruits, and vegetables to the community while I save up to purchase more land!
I have a flock of nineteen hens (wyandottes and easter eggers) and they are allowed to free range when I’m home and able to keep an eye on them. They lay eggs in shades of browns, blues, and greens, and the yolks are the most beautiful golden color you’ve ever seen!!
I also grow every type of vegetable you can likely imagine: radishes, peas, potatoes, green beans, tomatoes, peppers, garlic, squash…. the list goes on! Harvest was spotty this first year, but with the help of regenerative agriculture practices, I plan to have an unfathomable amount of produce available in 2022. πΆπ§π₯¬π₯π
And I also grow herbs! I usually have one or two types of fresh herbs at market, and several dried herbs. Depending on the week, I might have basil, mint, rosemary, thyme, or oregano.
This summer, 2021, I am selling at the West Point Farmers Market every other Saturday from 8am to 12pm. I am currently looking into options for a winter market, and a second summer market in 2022, so if you have a favorite farmers market around Richmond or King William let me know via email!
And while you’re at it, let me know if you would like to join our email list to get monthly farm updates with recipes and photos of Gravy π
