Four Feathers Farm

Find a Farm

Our Story

Four Feathers Farm was started when my oldest son who’s 11 wanted to earn a little money from all his hard work doing farm chores by selling eggs to a few small convenient stores. He came up with the name, one feather for him and each of his siblings who are younger and it was his way for them all to feel included.

We are a military family, which means my husband was always deployed. We made the decision for him to switch from active duty to guard in hopes of getting an AGR spot as soon as possible. Guard pay cut our income in half, AGR would allow us to go back to the pay we can comfortably live with. Unfortunately we are still waiting and are struggling financially. Since our eggs were selling so well I turned it into a business to help create a little income for our family. Every carton of eggs helps our family. My son is still able to earn money from taking care of all the birds everyday on his own or help from little siblings.

We started with 23 chickens early 2020 and now are up to 150 hens and 1 rescue rooster named “Cluck Norris”. We have a variety of colors and take all the opportunity to educate our kids about animals and their care. We are constantly trying to improve the quality of life for our hens. They are all let out every day to roam our woods and around the yard. They are fed organic, GMO free feed that makes up 20% of their diet. Also grow our own fodder from wheat seeds to help keep feed cost down and they enjoy eating all the bugs they have access to roaming around the property.

The hens are allowed to go anywhere they want, and while you’d think they’d all go in the woods most stay around the house and like to hop into our pig pens to hang out with the pigs, some even try to sleep with our male pig “Wilbur” and we have to pull them out of his house at night to make them go back to their coop to get locked up to keep them safe. Otherwise everyone goes back to the coop at night all on their own
