Our Story
Welcome to Getzelman Family Farm.
We are a 4th generation and a Centennial Farm since 1911.
The farm has raised all kinds of livestock and crops over the years including beef cattle, hogs, and chickens, as well as hay, corn, soybeans, pickles, and strawberries. In the 1950’s my parents had an egg farm when WHITE eggs were popular. Even back then their birds were cage free.
Currently my fiancé, Brian, and I raise hens that lay BROWN eggs since that is what our customers prefer. Our chickens are CAGE FREE, FREE ROAMING, and fed an ALL VEGETARIAN DIET (No animal products fed). We never feed our hens hormones or antibiotics.
Weather permitting and under supervision our girls (hens) are allowed onto our alfalfa field to forage for some tasty bugs. They must be supervised as we have many hungry hawks circling overhead seeking an easy chicken dinner.
Our eggs are collected twice daily and washed, graded, and candled in accordance to the rules of the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
Brian and I initially began raising and showing Boer Meat goats. We did quite well and won many champion ribbons. But we soon realized a ribbon doesn’t pay for the upkeep of the farm. So we changed our direction into selling CHEVON (goat meat) at the local Farmers Markets. Did you know goat meat has LESS FAT, LESS CHOLESTEROL, and LESS CALORIES than BEEF, PORK, LAMB, or CHICKEN?
