Our Story
STORY OF OUR FARM
White Oak Meadows was established in 2013 by Jim Medeiros and Cyrille Young. For Jim, farming is a passion, calling, and lifestyle. His grandparents and great-grandparents both farmed dairy and vegetables. He grew up working on many different types of farms, including dairy, beef, and even cleaning turnips on a truck farm as a kid. Jim bought his first cow when he was 15 and even had a small herd of beef cattle before graduating high school. In approximately 2000, Jim was able to start working toward his dream of being a full-time farmer by raising replacement heifers for local dairy farms. By the late 2000s, Jim began the switch to organic and grass-fed practices. In 2012 Jim and Cyrille purchased land that had previously been used for the growth of small grains and tobacco in Wilsons, VA. It was here that White Oak Meadows was established. Transitioning the land from its traditional use to a chemical-free, grass-based, and rotational grazing operation has taken hard work and time. As Jim says, “It’s a work in progress; some days I make progress, most days I just work”.
OUR FARMING PRACTICES
Here at White Oak Meadows, our focus is building and maintaining healthy soils. Healthy soil retains water, sequesters carbon, and most importantly, produces the grasses, legumes, forbs, and weeds – yes weeds – that help grow healthy livestock and poultry without the use of any synthetic inputs. We believe chemicals have no place in our food, and since we eat what we produce, chemicals have no place on our farm.
We offer 100% grass-fed, antibiotic-free, raw dairy products through a herdshare program along with 100% grass-fed beef. White Oak Meadows also produces pastured poultry broilers, fryers, and cut-up chicken, along with multi-colored free-range eggs. Our chickens are supplemented with non-GMO grains.
